Who Says Pigs Can´t Fly?
By Scott Werry - July 2010

The Coachella Valley is home to many famous and wealthy people. For some, the only limitations are their imagination and how to find companies that will satisfy their unusual requests. When ORR Builders was approached to move a 2,500 pound bronze pig, our owner was ready for the challenge.

The pig belongs to Katy Callender, the widow of Don Callender, who passed away in January. The founder of the Marie Callender's restaurant chain, Mr. Callender also opened Babe's at the River and Jackalope Ranch in Indio - both well known for their ribs and adorned with bronze pigs of their own. Since the pig was so large, moving it through the side yard was not an option. Considering their options, Greg Tropea, Brian Orr and I all looked at each other and said, almost simultaneously 'crane it!'' ORR had to go outside the valley to find a crane operator that could span 240 feet and handle the weight of the pig. The location of the pig was at the apex of the house so I entered the house to get an accurate measurement of the exact span. Even a 20 foot error could alter the counter balance of the crane and cause a problem.

The crane required close to 40 tons of counter weights, which arrived on four semi-trucks. In addition to the challenges of the mechanics and physics of the lift, the operation also required multiple site visits by Greg and me to coordinate with the home owners association, neighbors, Mrs. Callender and her personal assistant, Linda Delaney. While the lift itself took only 20 minutes, all the coordination to set up, stage the area and clear the area to place the pig took seven hours. Fortunately Manny Trevino, ORR's Equipment Operator and Carlos Martin, ORR's Laborer, were there to help.

Mrs. Callender is happy with the relocation of the pig, and she is equally pleased with the end result. I did sleep well that night. The night before my only thought was hoping that the pig would not slip off the cable and fall through the roof into the house.

If you are ever fortunate enough to play a round of golf at the Vintage, be sure to take a moment and smile when you go by the pig on the 15th hole.
